Melt butter in a large, deep pan or casserole with a tightfitting lid. Add sugar and stir over medium heat for 3min until melted. Add cabbage, vinegar and Ribena and toss to coat.

Bring to a gentle simmer, reduce heat to low and cover. Cook for 2hr, stirring cabbage often. Transfer to a warm dish for serving.
